The event will feature inspiring speakers, resource tables from campus and community organizations and a symbolic walk around campus demonstrating that no one has to walk the path of recovery alone. Participants are encouraged to wear purple, the official color of National Recovery Month, to show support.
“Students should never have to choose between their recovery and their education,” said Jeremy Bailey, a student and peer recovery support specialist. “Both are possible, and Marshall University is committed to walking that journey with them.”
Research supports the impact of campus recovery programs. A 2025 study by Noel Vest, a Boston University School of Public Health researcher, and colleagues noted that when students in recovery are supported, they contribute to a healthier campus environment, shifting the narrative around substance use and fostering cultures of well-being.
“Recovery is not about becoming someone new; it’s about remembering who you were before the world told you who you couldn’t be,” Marshall University President Brad D. Smith said.
The public is invited to attend. Whether you are in recovery, an ally or simply want to show your support and learn more, your presence matters.
News media are invited to attend to capture the walk, listen to speakers and showcase Marshall University’s commitment to building a supportive campus community.
