Criminal Justice students excel at statewide educators conference

Marshall University undergraduate and graduate students made an impressive showing at the annual West Virginia Criminal Justice Educators’ Association (WVCJEA) Conference, hosted on campus and coordinated by Dr. Leslie Quick. Several Forensic Science graduate students helped lead the event by organizing the crime scene competition at the university’s new crime scene house.

Marshall students earned top honors across multiple competitions:

  • CJA-sponsored quiz bowl team “The Criminal Elements” took first place for the third year in a row. Team representatives were: Dylan Andrus, Sydney Deaton, Devin Hopkins, Emma Smith, and Madilyn Smith.
  • APS-sponsored quiz bowl team “The Thundering Justice” placed second. Team representatives were: Matison Brown, Ben McElroy, Aiden McCloud, Demi Olin, and Sydney Scholl.
  • APS-sponsored crime scene team “The Bison Bureau of Investigations” also placed second. Team representatives were: Matison Brown, Pacey Frum, Devin Hopkins, Ben McElroy, Aidan McCloud, Sydney Scholl, and Emma Smith.
  • In the state undergraduate paper competition, Demi Olin Lamp took first place and Ben McElroy earned third.
  • In the graduate paper competition, Dylan Andrus placed first.

In addition to their awards, Andrus presented “Police Misconduct: A Thematic Analysis of Academic Research and Policy Recommendations” and Olin Lamp presented “The Rise of AI in Policing: A Critical Perspective.”

The College of Science congratulates all participants and extends special thanks to the student volunteers who helped make the conference a success.
